The Old Man and the Sea (C)

Good news- the book isn't as bad as the first time I read it. Other news- I still don’t necessarily like the book. Nor do I terribly dislike it I should add. I suppose the way I would describe it is with the picture; a disgruntled meh. Fundamentally I think it has a boring plot and I am left entirely emotionless. I have a sneaking suspicion that the only reason that this book is continued to be taught is not for the merit of the story but, as many books in English classes are chosen, because of that it is a perfect example with enough symbolism to promote debate. It is, in effect, on the the best examples of nihilism that I have read. But beyond the fact that it can be used as such a device, I feel the book is pointless. The problem I mainly have with the book is that I feel the same amount of interest, emotion, and plot as reading a cookbook. The man went to the sea. The man drank some water. The sharks ate the fish. The man went to bed. Meh.
